Advancing American Freedom, an advocacy group founded by Mike Pence, is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on ads in an attempt to derail the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head up Health and Human Services (HHS), reports say.
The ads, which highlight Kennedy’s pro-choice stance on abortion and what the corporate media contend is his anti-vaccine positions, are running through the scheduled Jan. 29 confirmation hearing for President Donald Trump's HHS selection, The Hill reported. Kennedy will face questions from members of the Senate Finance Committee, which directly oversees the department.
No Senate Republican has publicly said they will vote against the nomination. Kennedy can afford to lose three GOP votes if every Democrat opposes him.
Pence's organization last week sent a letter to senators urging them to vote against confirming Kennedy due to his previous support for abortion.
“While RFK Jr. has made certain overtures to pro-life leaders that he would be mindful of their concerns at HHS, there is little reason for confidence at this time,” the group’s leaders wrote.
Kennedy has said his personal views don’t matter and that he will implement all of the president's pro-life policies.
TapNewsWire reported that a PR firm chaired by Federalist Society co-chair Leonard Leo is backing Pence's effort to stop Kennedy's confirmation.
Leo’s firm, CRC Advisors, is helping publicize the campaign by Advancing American Freedom, the report said.
Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who supports Kennedy’s nomination and his Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) priorities, warned that senators are facing immense pressure from large corporations profiting off the country’s chronic disease crises to oppose Kennedy’s nomination.
“I do believe that there are nefarious actors within the agriculture and food industries that are going to start putting financial top-down pressure on some of these senators in an effort to block his confirmation because they’re making a lot of money on making people sick, Luna, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “[Opposing Kennedy’s nomination] would signify that they’re corporate shills that have no invested interest in keeping our people healthy but sick for their own personal gain and interest.”
“There’s a lot of good people here in Washington, but there’s also a lot of bad people that I think are more controlled by corporations,” Luna added.
Luna said she believes that GOP senators would be rejecting Trump’s mandate and core campaign promise to “Make America Healthy Again” if they were to oppose Kennedy’s nomination.
Senators that vote “no” on Kennedy’s nomination would also invite backlash from millions of Trump-Vance voters across the country, including self-described “MAHA moms” that want to feed their families healthy foods free of toxins and harmful additives, according to Luna, who counts herself in that cohort.
“A lot of people have no idea the underground force that they’re playing with: the amount of moms especially that just do not want this sh*t in their food,” Luna, who described herself as label-conscious when she goes grocery shopping, said.
