One of the prime operatives who pushed the lawfare impeachment campaign against President Donald Trump lost his re-election bid.
New York Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman was trounced in Tuesday’s primary in New York’s 10th congressional district by socialist Brad Lander, who was backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Goldman instantly worked his way into the Democrat Party’s good graces as one of the leaders of the anti-Trump resistance. He was the lead prosecutor in the House impeachment inquiry into Trump’s pressure campaign on Ukraine.
He parlayed that good will into a seat in Congress in 2022, where he remained a vocal critic of Trump.
“He used his seat to aggressively push for follow-up investigations of the president, leading the charge on post-January 6th accountability measures while maintaining a near-constant presence on cable news to pick apart Trump’s legal strategy and policy platform,” Breitbart News noted. “But in the end, voters in the 10th District decided that being Washington’s favorite prosecutor was not enough to save his seat at home.”
Trump celebrated Goldman’s defeat, writing on Truth Social:
Weak and pathetic Congressman Dan Goldman just lost, BIG! I guess people didn’t like him illegally targeting President TRUMP. In any event, this jerk is finally GONE!
The Mamdani effect played a key role in Goldman’s defeat.
Lander has accused Israel of genocide in Gaza. Goldman was backed by pro-Israel groups.
Lander, who was also endorsed by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, easily beat Goldman by 65.7% to 34.1%.
Two other Mamdani-backed socialists won in Tuesday’s Democrat primary in New York.
Assemblywoman Claire Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in the 7th district.
In the 11th district, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a doctoral student who has joined pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University, defeated Adriano Espaillat, who had held the district for five terms and is chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
In New York’s affluent 12th district, Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F Kennedy, lost his election. Schlossberg, 33, was defeated by assembly member Micah Lasher in the race to succeed Rep. Jerry Nadler. Lasher was an aide to Nadler, who is retiring after 17 terms.
George Conway, the ex-husband of Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway and a frequent critic of Trump, was a distant also-ran in the 12th district. Conway, who set up the never-Trumper group Lincoln Project, won only about 6% of the vote.
