On Saturday, President Donald Trump ordered a 25% tariff on Mexican imports, saying the U.S.'s southern neighbor has failed to meet his demands of addressing the fentanyl and illegal immigration crises.
By Monday morning, Mexico, which had been threatening to take retaliatory measures, caved to Trump's pressure as President Claudia Sheinbaum announced 10,000 Mexican National Guard would be deployed to the border.
In exchange, Trump agreed to a one-month pause on the imposition of a 25% across-the-board tariff.
“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “We will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two Countries.”
About 80% of Mexico's exports go to the United States. Just 16% of U.S. exports go to Mexico, with about $775 billion worth of goods traded between the two countries last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
Also on Monday, Trump announced he was placing a 30-day pause on tariffs on Canada after the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to send 10,000 troops to secure the border and would name a fentanyl czar.
“Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl,” said Trudeau, who announced his intention to resign as prime minister and as leader of the Liberal Party last month.
Trump, who also ordered a 25% tariff on Canada over the fentanyl and illegal immigration crises and a 10% across-the-board tariff on China, said in a Truth Social post on Monday:
Anybody that’s against Tariffs, including the Fake News Wall Street Journal, and Hedge Funds, is only against them because these people or entities are controlled by China, or other foreign or domestic companies. We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There is no reason. We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS! Canada doesn’t even allow U.S. Banks to open or do business there. What’s that all about?
