‘Big mistake’: Zarif’s tape and Khamenei’s spin exposed IRGC’s power, John Kerry

In a three-hour "confidential" conversation recently published by U.S. media, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is heard saying that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) overrules many government decisions.

He also detailed intelligence disclosures he received from John Kerry and the outsized role played by killed IRGC Quds Force Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

"In the Islamic Republic the military field rules," Zarif is heard telling a pro-government journalist. "I have sacrificed diplomacy for the military field rather than the field servicing diplomacy."

Analysts say Zarif’s comments on the tape strongly suggest what is widely known that the IRGC is actually in control of the country.

However, it was totally unexpected for Iran's top civilian diplomat to admit as much.

Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei slammed the unveiled audio recordings of Zarif, as a "big mistake.”

Khamenei then attempted to put his best spin on the situation by proclaiming in a televised address: "The country's policies are made of different economic, military, social, scientific and cultural plans, including foreign relations and diplomacy."
