California Democrats finalized their effort to silence investigative journalism on Saturday as Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the “Stop Nick Shirley Act” into law.

The legislation outlaws the sharing of photos or personal data of “immigrant service” providers if done as “harassment.” Critics argue it violates the First Amendment and shields organizations which may be engaged in fraud from scrutiny.
Critics say that what Democrats and their media minions insist is an “immigrant protection” bill is squarely aimed at investigative journalists who are exposing massive fraud schemes.
The bill was introduced after YouTuber Nick Shirley posted viral videos of alleged fraud within daycare centers and non-profits.
Critics argue the law is designed to intimidate citizen journalists into silence.
Publications like The California Post and other independent media outlets warn that if a journalist exposes legitimate taxpayer-funded fraud, and a third party independently decides to threaten the organization, the journalist could unfairly face criminal charges under the new law.
Opponents also argue the legislation allows NGOs and activists to demand the takedown of public video evidence capturing misconduct, creating a heavy financial and legal penalty system for recording in public spaces.
Shirley criticized the legislation, arguing it was created after he “exposed widespread fraud in immigrant communities,” according to the New York Post.
California state Assembly Member Mia Bonta introduced the bill in February after Shirley’s videos went viral.
“Our immigrant service providers are living in fear because of extremists looking to demonize the work that they do and the populations they serve,” Bonta said Saturday. “That is an intolerable consequence of the anti-immigrant rhetoric that exists right now.”
